About the position

Sparks Group has partnered with several prominent and successful companies in the Metro DC area to identify Payroll Specialists for various employment opportunities, including contract, contract-to-hire, and direct hire positions. The Payroll Specialist will play a crucial role in the payroll preparation process, ensuring that both salaried and hourly employees are compensated accurately and on time. This position requires a strong understanding of payroll processing, particularly in a multi-state environment, and the ability to handle various payroll-related tasks efficiently. In this role, the Payroll Specialist will assist in the preparation of semi-monthly payroll, which involves processing direct deposit authorization forms, W4 tax data, and any changes in employee personal data. The specialist will also be responsible for processing garnishments, including child support, tax levies, and student loans, ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Additionally, the role includes auditing payroll to ensure proper transmission and preparing daily ACH uploads and stop payments as necessary. The Payroll Specialist will serve as a point of contact for employees and internal departments regarding payroll-related inquiries, requiring excellent communication skills and a professional demeanor. This position is in-person, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and direct interaction with team members and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in payroll preparation required for processing semi-monthly multi-state payroll for salaried and hourly employees
  • Process direct deposit authorization forms, W4 tax data and changes in employee personal data
  • Process garnishments which include child supports, tax levies, student loans, WRIT of garnishments, etc.
  • Assist with the auditing of payroll to ensure proper transmission
  • Prepare daily ACH uploads and stop payments
  • Respond to inquiries from employees and internal departments regarding payroll-related concerns

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in business administration, finance or accounting preferred; experience in lieu of a degree is acceptable
  • 2+ years of experience processing multi-cycle, multi-state payroll for 500+ employees
  • High level proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and large ERP systems
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally in both verbal and written forms
  • Proven and effective time management skills, organizational skills, and ability to multi-task
