About the position

The Payroll Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the County-wide payroll function, ensuring the accurate processing of employee records and payroll transactions. This position serves as a key point of contact for payroll-related inquiries and is responsible for maintaining compliance with payroll laws and regulations while promoting high customer service standards.

Responsibilities

  • Administer monthly payroll runs, including calculating paychecks, importing time entries, and managing taxes and deductions.
  • Generate and distribute payroll reports for management approval.
  • Process personnel actions and maintain accurate payroll records and classifications.
  • Respond to payroll/HR-related inquiries and requests for employment verification.
  • Calculate and process wage garnishments, deductions, and adjustments.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll reporting and reconciliation on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Collaborate with peers to refine payroll processes and improve service standards.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payroll systems and internal practices.
  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of regulatory tax reports on a routine schedule.
  • Write and develop departmental procedures for internal payroll practices.
  • Protect confidentiality and ensure secure access to sensitive payroll data.
  • Uphold and promote high customer standards and responsiveness to all internal and external clients.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with payroll software and related technology.
  • Knowledge of payroll laws and regulations.
  • Solid understanding of accounting fundamentals and payroll best practices.
  • Experience in payroll system maintenance including data entry for new hires, leaves, transfers, terminations, and time off.
  • Team player with professional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively maintain Payroll/HR records and files.
  • 2-3 years' experience in a large scale payroll environment with accountability for on-time, accurate processing of payroll-related payments.
  • Knowledge of large-scale operations with multiple business entities preferred.
  • Government experience is a plus.
  • Associate's degree or equivalent, related experience required, OR equivalent combination of experience and education.
