About the position

The Payroll Specialist position at Jefferson Wells is a 6-month contract role based in San Francisco, CA, requiring onsite presence two days a week. The role focuses on ensuring timely and accurate payroll processing, maintaining payroll records, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience in multi-state payroll and strong Excel skills, preferably within a professional services or law firm environment.

Responsibilities

  • Process regular and off-cycle payroll for employees accurately and timely.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Prepare and maintain payroll records and reports.
  • Assist with payroll-related inquiries from employees and management.
  • Track and calculate payments for Leave of Absence, applying relevant policies.
  • Manage employee benefit deductions, retirement plans, and non-cash benefits.
  • Apply IRS rules on non-cash benefits and complex tax scenarios.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of payroll processing experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related discipline strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
  • Proficient in Payroll systems, HRIS systems, and Microsoft Office (with strong Excel capabilities).
  • FPC or CPP certifications a plus.
  • Highly detail oriented, determined, collaborative, and organized in work with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. and pass a background check.
