About the position

The City of Cedar Rapids is seeking a Payroll Specialist to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing for municipal employees. This role involves maintaining payroll records, calculating and processing payroll, and adhering to tax and labor regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong attention to detail and a commitment to confidentiality and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Perform data entry for employees into HCM software for payroll and deductions purposes
  • Maintain proper records and files for all departments in accordance with city policies and applicable laws
  • Index employee documents into electronic record keeping system
  • Knowledgeable in bargaining contracts and personnel policy for payroll purposes
  • Troubleshoot and resolve payroll related issues
  • Provide quality customer service to city managers, supervisors, employees, and external customers
  • Partner with city managers, supervisors, employees, and external auditors to prepare reports
  • Conduct internal audits to ensure accuracy of time reporting, deductions, reimbursements, FMLA, pre and post processing
  • Communicate with employees on payroll discrepancies
  • Stay current with industry payroll trends, concepts, practices, and time reporting to address challenges and initiatives
  • Participate in new hire onboarding
  • Meet daily and weekly time sensitive deadlines
  • Perform all works in accordance with city policies, procedures, and safety practices
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to provide backup support and process occasional off cycle payroll runs
  • Willingness to accept and complete other projects as assigned
  • Perform related work as required.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business or related field
  • 1 to 3 years of experience with Payroll, Human Resources or Finance
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population
