About the position

Express Employment is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Payroll Specialist for their client in Plymouth, MI. This full-time, long-term position is with a rapidly growing construction company. The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for processing payroll for employees across multiple states and job sites, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, managing timekeeping records, and resolving payroll-related inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Process weekly payroll for employees across multiple states and job sites.
  • Ensure accurate and timely calculation of wages, overtime, bonuses, and other pay adjustments.
  • Review and verify timesheets, ensuring compliance with company policies and state-specific labor laws.
  • Maintain employee records, including tax withholding, benefits, and deductions.
  • Ensure accurate reporting and remittance of payroll taxes in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Prepare and file necessary payroll-related reports, including tax filings and year-end documentation (W-2s, 1099s, etc.).
  • Respond to employee inquiries related to payroll, benefits, and tax issues.
  • Work closely with HR, accounting, and project managers to track employee status and project allocations.
  • Assist in audits and assist with any payroll-related compliance issues.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree or payroll certification preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in payroll processing, preferably in a multi-state or construction-related environment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state payroll regulations, tax laws, and labor compliance requirements.
  • Experience with payroll software (e.g., ADP, Paychex, or similar).
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Construction industry experience is a plus but not required.
