About the position

The Payroll Specialist position at The Aleut Corporation is a full-time role based in Anchorage, AK, responsible for managing all aspects of payroll processing. Additionally, the specialist will prepare reports and payments for various employer and employee-paid benefits, such as union dues, pension contributions, health insurance, flexible spending accounts, and workers' compensation. The position also involves ensuring proper payroll deductions for taxes and benefits, reconciling payroll with the general ledger and monthly bank statements, and issuing checks or direct deposits as necessary. The Payroll Specialist will interpret company policies and government regulations related to payroll and tax procedures, validate payroll tax postings, and support internal and external audits. The role requires the ability to provide ad hoc management reports and analysis, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws. Other duties may be assigned as needed, making this a dynamic and essential role within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Process all aspects of payroll including timecards and payroll control records.
  • Calculate and verify the accuracy of payroll data.
  • Prepare reports and payments for employer and employee paid benefit costs.
  • Ensure proper processing of payroll deductions for taxes and benefits.
  • Reconcile payroll to the general ledger and monthly bank statements.
  • Issue or reissue physical or replacement checks or direct deposits due to payroll errors.
  • Interpret company policies and government regulations related to payroll and tax procedures.
  • Review and validate the accuracy of payroll tax postings to the general ledger.
  • Support DCCA requirements and audits.
  • Provide ad hoc management reports and analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Two years of payroll processing experience, including understanding of payroll compliance.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations.
  • Knowledge of payroll functions including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Knowledge of financial and accounting software applications.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate degree in accounting or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Experience working with Cost Point and UKG.
  • Experience working in government contracting and Davis Bacon labor standards.
  • Experience working with Alaska Native Corporations (ANC's).
