About the position

The Payroll Specialist at Bowling Green State University is responsible for processing biweekly and monthly payrolls for various employee classes using an ERP platform. This role requires a thorough understanding of payroll, human resources, and financial accounting processes, as well as managing Time & Labor systems across the campus. The specialist will interact with faculty, staff, students, and former employees to address payroll, tax, and retirement credit issues, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Process biweekly and monthly payrolls for all employee classes using an ERP platform.
  • Manage Time & Labor time recording systems across campus.
  • Verify new employees and employment/tax/benefit change submissions for accurate payroll processing.
  • Supervise payroll staff on data input and leave reporting for classified and student employees.
  • Confirm final payroll and audit accounting lines for budget data before interfacing to the general ledger.
  • Extract tax and benefit vendor invoices and generate multiple interface files between HCM and FMS.
  • Research budget and payroll inquiries from Budget Managers and Grants Accounting.
  • Address employee questions regarding pay, benefits, tax issues, garnishments, and retirement plans.
  • Reconcile and file monthly OPERS reports for various employee categories.
  • Process new hire, retirement, refund, and prior service request paperwork for retirement systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field, conferred at the time of application.
  • 2 years of experience in a computerized payroll system handling multiple budgets and employee types.
  • 2 years of experience preparing payroll tax returns.
  • Strong computer skills including spreadsheet, word processing, and database experience.
  • Knowledge of IRS regulations, FLSA, and tax withholding requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft Human Capital Management system is highly preferred.
  • Experience supervising payroll staff.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
