About the position

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for performing complex administrative support work related to payroll processing, ensuring accurate calculation and timely distribution of employee compensation and benefit deductions. This role requires adherence to accounting principles and regulatory requirements while managing payroll discrepancies and maintaining employee records.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and computes all division payrolls, making deductions for taxes, retirement, insurance, and other necessary deductions.
  • Processes monthly employee contracted, hourly, and daily wages for Operating Fund and Food Service Fund accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Performs verification, reconciliation, and resolves discrepancies of all payroll documents including absence reporting, time cards, and time sheets.
  • Manages employee leave records and administers Sick Leave Bank.
  • Trains school and department administrative support staff and bookkeepers on payroll procedures and reporting.
  • Develops and maintains various payroll procedures/manual.
  • Prepares a variety of payroll-related documents and data reports.
  • Communicates with a variety of internal and external parties.
  • Maintains employee compensation records, various reports, files, and departmental records of confidential personnel data as it relates to payroll.
  • Imports and exports data from other employee/leave systems.
  • Assists with employee personnel demographic information in the system.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree with at least 5 years' experience in accounting/finance, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Familiarity with accounting principles, methods, and practices with experience in automatic accounting systems.
  • Strong PC skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material.
  • Ability to perform detailed work involving written or numerical data.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve various payroll discrepancies.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to work well under pressure to meet required deadlines.
  • Strong work ethic and team player mentality.
  • Exhibits a high degree of professionalism.
