About the position

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of payroll processing, including preparation, disbursement, and maintenance of payroll records. This role involves ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations while providing support to employees regarding payroll inquiries. The Payroll Specialist will also work closely with the Accounting Supervisor to reconcile payroll accounts and assist with various accounting functions as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review, verify, process, and maintain payroll records including leave accruals and balances.
  • Audit documents for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with policies and procedures.
  • Process and disburse bi-weekly and supplemental payroll.
  • Audit and prepare journal transactions, reports, forms, and records for payment of payroll liabilities.
  • Prepare and file necessary payroll tax forms with appropriate agencies.
  • Ensure timely submission of employee forms and taxing agency reports.
  • Process payments for payroll liabilities and voluntary deductions.
  • Work with Accounting Supervisor to reconcile payroll accounts and identify deficiencies.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll and provide general accounting information.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable Tribal policies and state and federal laws.
  • Utilize various computer programs to enter and maintain data, generate reports, and create documents.
  • Provide back-up support for other accounting functions and participate in special projects.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of payroll program operations, services, and activities.
  • Understanding of principles and practices of payroll preparation, disbursement, reporting, and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with federal and state tax regulations and payroll accounting principles.
  • Ability to perform complex technical payroll accounting duties with independent judgment.
  • Strong mathematical skills and proficiency in English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Experience with office procedures and applicable software applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with 24-7 scheduling is desirable.
