About the position

Join our comprehensive HR/Payroll department as a Payroll Specialist at Seattle Pacific University. Initially, you will serve as the Payroll Project Lead for the SPU Workday implementation, transitioning into an ongoing HR/Payroll role. Your primary responsibilities will include defining payroll standards and business requirements, drafting payroll specifications, testing configurations, and acting as a liaison between Payroll staff, users, and the implementation team. You will support Payroll, Human Resources, and accounting staff, develop and implement payroll processes and internal controls, and provide backup for payroll staff. Additionally, you will develop training materials and maintain payroll documentation. Exemplifying excellent service to staff and students while maintaining confidentiality is essential. You will collaborate closely with Student Financial Services and Finance to achieve objectives. In this role, you will define project standards and payroll business requirements, draft payroll specifications to meet business needs, and manage all payroll-related processing activities efficiently. This includes analyzing discrepancies and inputting payroll data. As the payroll system's subject matter expert, you will maintain system configurations and conduct user acceptance tests. You will implement and enforce internal controls for payroll processes, including SOC 2 internal controls, and provide excellent customer service with timely responses to staff and student inquiries. Staying updated on payroll laws, regulations, taxes, and garnishment orders is crucial, as is ensuring accurate calculation and reporting of mandatory and voluntary withholdings and deductions. You will also oversee the outsourced payroll tax service provider (ADP), ensuring timely and accurate tax payments and filings.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the outsourced payroll tax service provider (ADP), ensuring timely and accurate tax payments and filings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3 to 6 years of applicable professional experience.
  • Excellent attention to detail, precision, and accuracy in payroll functions.
  • Effective and empathetic communication skills.
  • Collaborative spirit and strong team player.
  • Maturing and contagious Christian faith, with a commitment to support the University's Christian mission and lifestyle standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in business, HR, accounting, or related field.
  • Experience working in a Workday HCM environment and/or with Banner (Ellucian) systems.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification.
  • Experience working in higher education.
