About the position

The Payroll Specialist at the University of Oklahoma is responsible for managing payroll processes for over 7000 employees, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing, cost transfers, and compliance with payroll regulations. This role supports the financial management of the university by handling payroll-related inquiries and maintaining the timekeeping system, while also contributing to the overall success of the financial services department.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for on and off cycle payroll processing for 7000+ employees
  • Manage cost transfers and payment review/approval
  • Oversee the management of the timekeeping system
  • Assist payroll coordinators and answer payroll and timekeeping questions
  • Manage and prepare retirement statements for withholding accounts
  • Prepare payroll liability journals
  • Track and process overpayments and paycheck reversals
  • Assist with payroll tax withholding and payroll reporting (941, W2, 1042, 1099)
  • Participate in system testing
  • Assist employees via email and/or phone with payroll-related questions
  • Review garnishment entry for accuracy
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure departmental success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field (or 48 months of related experience in lieu of degree)
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, practices, methods, and terminology
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Office and accounting software
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
