About the position

The Payroll Specialist position at Robert Half is a permanent role based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, designed for individuals seeking a challenging opportunity with significant career growth potential. The role involves ensuring the accurate and timely production of payroll for employees while providing strong internal customer service in a deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Information Technology, Human Resources, and other internal business partners to ensure security protocols for pay systems
  • Arrange timely processing of payroll in accordance with labor regulations and standard accounting principles
  • Direct quarterly and year-end payroll reports
  • Aid staff with wage deductions, fringe benefits, pay related issues, PTO accruals, and general questions related to payroll
  • Handle voluntary deductions, as well as wage garnishments, pay levies, and other involuntary court-ordered payments in a timely manner, including reporting to the necessary authorities
  • Operate regular payroll reporting as required and assist with financial audits related to pay records and associated general ledger
  • Examine data entered by others in the payroll software to include, but not limited to salary/wage increases, benefit deductions, employee termination dates, and employee leaves of absence under FMLA or other unpaid leave
  • Obey to current payroll tax requirements and relevant laws associated with the processing of employee wage data, including payroll taxes, employee federal and state income and social security taxes and other required reporting
  • Improve systems and protocols to direct the collection, calculation and entering of pay data
  • Explore payroll areas, pay practices related to FLSA, and fringe benefit reporting to determine how those practices apply to advise management

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in a Payroll role
  • Proficient in multi-state payroll, weekly payroll, and biweekly payroll processes
  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now software is preferred
  • Proficiency in Benefits Coordination
  • Detailed understanding of payroll garnishments
  • Knowledge of 401k and RRSP administration
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise extreme discretion
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
