About the position

The Payroll Specialist position at Weld County is responsible for processing payroll for all county employees, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role involves validating time entries, paycheck calculations, and maintaining the integrity of payroll data. The Payroll Specialist will also provide customer service to employees regarding payroll inquiries and assist with various payroll-related tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Process exempt and nonexempt payroll for all county employees monthly or as needed.
  • Validate time entries and perform audits to ensure accuracy.
  • Reconcile payroll data for integrity and compliance with regulations.
  • Handle remittance for benefit deductions, garnishments, and child support.
  • Assist departments with payroll processing procedures as necessary.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll issues and calculations.
  • Prepare computation worksheets for manual check adjustments and payroll corrections.
  • Process payroll detail reports and perform computer inquiries related to payroll.
  • Calculate garnishments according to applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assist with year-end payroll reconciliation and reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, public or business administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of payroll experience with working knowledge of payroll systems.
  • Strong quantitative and financial analysis skills, including proficiency in Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification from the American Payroll Association.
  • Experience in public sector payroll, HR, or finance.
  • Advanced skills in financial systems and HRIS database management.
