About the position

AbbVie is seeking a Payroll Tax Lead to join our team in Florham Park, NJ. This hybrid role requires three days a week in the office and offers the possibility of relocation to North Chicago. The Payroll Tax Lead will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll tax payments, reporting, and compliance across the organization, specifically overseeing payroll tax operations for the US and Puerto Rico. The successful candidate will stay updated on tax regulations and implement necessary adjustments to maintain compliance standards. This role demands strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of payroll tax legislation, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance payroll tax procedures. In this position, the Payroll Tax Lead will support activities necessary for processing payroll for the US and Puerto Rico, which includes inspecting and auditing tax registers, ensuring accuracy in tax filing and reporting, and preparing yearly tax statements. The lead will monitor and understand federal, state, and local tax laws to ensure compliance, perform regular audits to identify and resolve compliance issues, and work closely with the Payroll Team to ensure timely processing of payroll tax liabilities. Additionally, the role involves reconciling state withholding and unemployment taxes, ensuring timely remittance of payroll tax deposits, and partnering with internal stakeholders and ADP to apply for necessary identification numbers when entering new jurisdictions. The Payroll Tax Lead will also be responsible for leading and driving RSU vesting and year-end payroll processing activities, troubleshooting system issues related to payroll tax calculations, and identifying opportunities for automation to improve efficiency and accuracy in payroll tax processes. Some travel may be required for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Process accurate and timely payroll tax payments and reporting.
  • Oversee US and Puerto Rico payroll tax operations and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Monitor federal, state, and local tax laws to maintain compliance standards.
  • Perform regular audits to identify and resolve compliance issues.
  • Collaborate with the Payroll Team for accurate processing of payroll tax liabilities.
  • Reconcile state withholding and unemployment taxes monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Ensure timely and accurate remittance of payroll tax deposits.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and ADP for identification number applications.
  • Monitor required tax filings and amendments for state and federal returns.
  • Lead RSU vesting and year-end payroll processing activities.
  • Troubleshoot system issues related to payroll tax calculations.
  • Evaluate and improve payroll tax processes for efficiency and accuracy.
  • Identify automation opportunities and lead implementation efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Finance / Accounting / Tax.
  • Minimum 5 years of US and Puerto Rico payroll tax experience required.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or equivalent highly preferred.
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and related functions with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and collaborate with multiple stakeholders.
  • Good analytical and process diagnostic skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
