About the position

The Payroll Tax Specialist is responsible for ensuring the timely filing and payment of payroll and unemployment tax liabilities for the company and its subsidiaries. This role involves reviewing payroll activity reports for tax compliance, resolving tax issues with the Payroll department, and preparing necessary documentation and journal entries related to payroll taxes. The position requires a strong understanding of payroll tax laws and compliance, as well as the ability to research and implement tax technology solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the timely filing and payment of payroll and unemployment tax liabilities for the company and its subsidiaries.
  • Reviews weekly payroll activity reports to ensure tax compliance.
  • Works with Payroll to resolve any tax issues.
  • Provides Corporate Treasury with federal and state payroll tax payments on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
  • Prepares the subsequent journal entry to the General Ledger.
  • Reconciles General Ledger payroll liability accounts on a quarterly basis.
  • Acts as a liaison for the unemployment service provider.
  • Reviews accruals for unemployment tax rates.
  • Prepares quarterly state unemployment returns and resulting payments.
  • Prepares unemployment tax forecasts to Treasury on a monthly basis.
  • Reconciles unemployment General Ledger liability account on a quarterly basis.
  • Researches and implements current tax technology ensuring compliance and that savings opportunities are captured.
  • Researches federal and state tax literature to stay abreast of legislative actions and ensure tax compliance.
  • Gathers and maintains documentation in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).
  • Conducts quarterly testing of audit controls in accordance with SOX.
  • Utilizes Oracle ERP system and proprietary software similar to Master Tax.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret payroll and employment tax laws.
  • Strong PC skills.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • 3-5 years of accounting related experience.
  • Understanding of payroll tax compliance.
