About the position

The Payroll Tax Specialist at Compass Payroll Services is responsible for the accurate and timely payment and filing of client tax payments and tax returns. This role involves collaborating with the Processing Team to address client inquiries and ensuring compliance with payroll tax regulations. The specialist will also handle tax adjustments, maintain client files, and stay updated on tax law changes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide complete customer service coverage regarding all areas of payroll tax compliance.
  • Prepare customer tax returns for federal, state, city, state unemployment, school districts, and BWC True-up reports accurately and timely.
  • Pay all federal, state, local, SUTA/FUTA, school district, and BWC premiums promptly and accurately.
  • Address client tax notices in a timely manner according to company policy.
  • Maintain customer files, both active and inactive, including POA (power of attorney).
  • Assist in the setup of various online tax accounts for new clients and those expanding.
  • Assist in the setup of 3rd party tax accounts for Compass Payroll.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information.
  • Verify the accuracy of tax form uploads and stay current with payroll tax software updates.
  • Process client debit/credits as applicable.
  • Work with the processing team to deliver extraordinary customer service and resolve client issues.
  • Adhere to established internal procedures for resolving tax notices.
  • Review and log Separation of Service documents.
  • Assist with the development of processes and procedures within the company.
  • Review, test, and assist in evaluating system software problems and resolutions.
  • Identify areas for product/system improvements and make recommendations to the Payroll Operations Manager.
  • Participate in company projects as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience in the payroll/tax field.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with payroll tax concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Professional and courteous verbal and email communication skills.
  • Ability to address customer issues effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member.
  • Flexibility to work overtime as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Payroll processing experience a plus.
  • FPC or CPP preferred.
