About the position

The Payroll Tax Specialist is responsible for processing payroll-related tax and general ledger functions within the Payroll Department. This role ensures compliance with bank policies and federal, state, and local regulations while performing payroll tax analysis, reconciling tax information, and generating necessary reports. The specialist will also coordinate the maintenance of payroll records, resolve issues with tax agencies, and support acquisition activities related to payroll.

Responsibilities

  • Process payroll tax and general ledger functions in compliance with regulations.
  • Perform payroll tax analysis and reconcile quarterly tax information.
  • Work with tax agency representatives to resolve outstanding issues.
  • Create and modify reports as needed for management review.
  • Coordinate maintenance of payroll records and generate W-2s and other regulatory reports.
  • Ensure accuracy of reports and adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Support acquisition activity including setting up location codes and auditing reports.
  • Reconcile the general ledger and tax reports in conjunction with third-party providers.
  • Monitor audit reports and work with payroll processors to adjust transactional work.
  • Develop and implement procedures to resolve recurring issues.
  • Interact with cross-functional areas to resolve issues and develop solutions.
  • Respond to and resolve inquiries from management regarding payroll issues.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of related experience in payroll processing and tax analysis.
  • In-depth knowledge of payroll processing practices and applicable laws.
  • Solid basic accounting skills and knowledge.
  • Experience with in-house Payroll HRI System, preferably PeopleSoft.
  • Experience with multi-state tax service or outsourcing service to third-party providers.
  • Knowledge of laws affecting payroll taxes.
  • Excellent customer service orientation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly on financial matters.
