About the position

The Payroll & Travel Accountant position at the Arizona Department of Education is responsible for maintaining fiscal services related to state appropriations and federal grants. This role involves processing accounting transactions, managing travel claims, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles. The position operates in a hybrid work environment, requiring occasional in-office presence and rare in-state travel.

Responsibilities

  • Processes accounting transactions involving federal grants and state appropriated funds in AZ360 and HRIS.
  • Utilizes accounting reports and guides to verify accounting information is appropriately coded.
  • Primarily responsible for processing a high volume of travel claims for internal employees.
  • Assists travelers in completing travel claims and out-of-state packets.
  • Reviews biweekly time sheets for over 700 employees for errors and adjustments.
  • Monitors updates to payroll and travel policy and communicates changes to relevant teams.
  • Updates operating procedures and training manuals for stakeholders.
  • Logs daily incoming customer claims and requests.
  • Maintains the Payroll, Travel, and personal inboxes and takes phone calls.
  • Attends virtual and in-person meetings to communicate with other accountants and HR.
  • Answers customer and vendor questions about payment/reimbursement status.
  • Aids in preparing and presenting travel information for new employee orientation and trainings.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of automated accounting systems and data processing as it relates to accounting practices.
  • Skills in analysis, interpretation, and reconciling financial data.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to problem solve and manage time effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to analyze difficult statistical data.

Nice-to-haves
