About the position

As a Layout Engineer in Axon’s PCB Design team, you will play a critical role in Axon’s hardware development by transforming complex electrical schematic designs into manufacturable, high-performance PCBs for products such as body-worn cameras, docking stations, in-vehicle products, drones, and TASER devices. In this role, you will design rigid, flex, and rigid-flex PCBs with advanced requirements and challenging characteristics such as high-density, controlled impedance routing, complex bends, high voltage isolation, and sensitive Radio Frequency signal integrity considerations. Your expertise and intuition not only in routing but also in signal integrity, noise mitigation, material selection, and manufacturing processes will ensure optimal performance and reliability in every design. Leveraging Allegro PCB Editor, you will deliver complete, high-quality PCB fabrication packages while working closely with experienced engineers and manufacturing partners to meet rigorous production standards. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop advanced skills, learn from industry experts, and grow within a team dedicated to delivering innovative solutions that empower Law Enforcement, Public Safety, and the communities they serve.

Responsibilities

  • Design rigid, flex, and rigid-flex PCBs that meet diverse technical requirements.
  • Create and validate component footprints while ensuring adherence to established design practices and industry standards.
  • Perform multilayer, high-density, high-speed routing, ensuring controlled impedance compliance and reliable signal integrity.
  • Address specific challenges such as complex bend-and-fold structures, BGA fanout, fine pitch spacing, high-voltage isolation, and RF signal considerations.
  • Use Allegro PCB Editor to perform routing, manage stack-ups, and create high-quality Gerber packages for manufacturing.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical and mechanical engineers to translate schematics and mechanical CAD into optimized PCB layouts that meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability standards.
  • Apply best practices for signal integrity, noise mitigation, material selection, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) to ensure robust, high-quality designs.
  • Review and analyze layout requirements to ensure compliance with product specifications and industry standards (e.g., IPC, ISO).
  • Engage with manufacturing partners to support PCB fabrication, address design challenges, and optimize production workflows.
  • Learn and grow by working alongside experienced engineers, gaining exposure to advanced technologies, and building expertise in areas like High-speed and RF design, high-voltage applications, and complex interconnect systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a similar engineering discipline, or equivalent technical training and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of PCB layout design experience, including rigid, flex, and rigid-flex PCB designs.
  • Experience with high-density, high-speed, multilayer PCB layout design and controlled impedance routing, including tight pin spacing, blind and buried vias, and RF trace routing.
  • Experience creating and validating component footprints, including packages such as SOIC, QFN, and BGA, with tight spacing and tolerances.
  • Understanding of signal integrity, noise mitigation, and PCB material properties (e.g., copper thickness, prepreg selection, stack-up design).
  • Experience creating and reviewing PCB fabrication packages that include gerbers, ODB++ files, DXFs, and drawings using Allegro PCB Editor or similar industry-standard PCB layout tools.
  • Familiarity with PCB manufacturing processes, including Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Testability (DFT), and PCB fabrication methods.
  • Knowledge of industry standards such as IPC-2220, IPC-6012, IPC-6013, or equivalent, with experience ensuring compliance in designs.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams (electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, manufacturing and design partners) to deliver high-quality layouts.
  • Proficiency with technical documentation and analysis tools, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the ability to clearly document and present design outcomes.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow, with a passion for building expertise in emerging technologies and advanced PCB design techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with OrCAD X or Allegro X
