About the position

The Pediatric ECMO/VAD Coordinator is a vital member of the heart transplant and VAD teams, responsible for coordinating clinical care from evaluation through post-procedure for patients requiring mechanical assist devices. This role involves patient assessment, education, and management, while solving complex clinical problems and collaborating with various medical professionals to enhance patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate care for patients requiring implantation of cardiac assist devices, including those awaiting heart transplants.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, and referring physicians during all stages of care.
  • Attend daily rounds and discharge planning, providing necessary documentation in the hospital EMR.
  • Act as a content expert for internal and external customers regarding VAD patient care, providing training as needed.
  • Educate patients and families throughout the pre-operative, intra-operative, post-operative, and discharge phases.
  • Collaborate with unit educators to develop device-specific nurse competencies for ICU and floor nurses.
  • Provide on-call coverage for pre and post VAD patients, and may cross-call for heart transplant patients.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of regulatory database entries.
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures, and standards while managing time and resources effectively.
  • Promote professional growth and development by meeting continuing education requirements and serving as a mentor.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Registered Nurse with a current State of Texas license to practice professional nursing.
  • Certified in PALS required for Pediatric VAD Coordinator role.
  • Minimum three years of experience in cardiovascular nursing, cardiac surgical nursing, critical care nursing, cardiac transplantation, or care of patients with ventricular assist devices.
  • Ability to promote teamwork and build effective relationships.
  • Strong customer service skills and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate clinic and hospital computer systems.

Nice-to-haves
