About the position

The University (UNV) 101 peer leader position is open to undergraduate students on the Pace University New York City campus for the Spring 2025 semester. Peer leaders play an integral part in helping new students acclimate to college life by acting as role models both inside and outside of the classroom. This experiential learning position requires participation in the classroom, working with an assigned faculty member for the UNV 101 course, and assisting that instructor in connecting first-year students to Pace. Peer leaders will help educate students about the tools to succeed and foster a sense of community within the UNV 101 class. Responsibilities include co-facilitating class sections, initiating contact with students, promoting Pace events, and assisting with classroom activities. Peer leaders will also mentor students, guide them in submitting their Pace Path Plans, and ensure they understand how to access and use technological resources effectively.

  • Initiate contact with students after orientation and maintain contact throughout the spring semester.

  • Collaborate with other peer leaders, student leaders, UNV 101 instructors, and FYE to welcome new students to Pace and help with move-in.
  • Help UNV 101 instructors set up the classroom, take attendance, conduct presentations, facilitate icebreakers and group team-building exercises, and reset the classroom after class.
  • Guide and assist all students in submitting their Pace Path Plans on the Pace Path web form.
  • Prepare presentations offering the student perspective on class topics with guidance from the UNV 101 instructor and FYE.
  • Motivate all students in their UNV 101 class to submit all assignments and in-class worksheets/exercises to the UNV 101 instructor via the CLASSES platform or the preferred modality of the instructor.
  • Participate in the class and assist the instructor with the technology of the course including Zoom, Pace Portal, the CLASSES platform, Excel, Microsoft Word, the Pace Path web form, the Pace website, PowerPoint, Schedule Explorer, the student functionality of the registration platform, and email.
  • Create a personal connection with each student in the UNV 101 class by knowing their first and last name, major/career path, interests, campus involvement, and concerns about college.
  • Engage in outreach to students throughout the semester to ensure that they are successfully transitioning to Pace academically and personally.
  • Assist students with questions and concerns and refer them to the correct department or office.
  • Promote the use of academic success skills and related resources such as the library and Learning Commons.
  • Encourage involvement in campus events and organizations.
  • Meet individually with each student in their UNV 101 class at least twice during the semester.
  • Discuss any concerns about a student with the UNV 101 instructor and, as appropriate, the First Year Experience Office.
  • Ensure that all students in the class understand how to access and effectively use technological resources of the class.
