About the position

The Peer Support Program Specialist position at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is responsible for managing and overseeing the Peer Support program within the Office of Health Security. This role ensures that the program meets established standards and effectively supports volunteers in their training and operational needs. The specialist will also handle marketing and recruitment efforts, respond to inquiries, and collaborate with other DHS components to enhance peer support resources across the department.

Responsibilities

• Manage the overall operation and success of the Peer Support program.
• Ensure standards of practice are met throughout all phases of program execution.
• Coordinate marketing and recruitment efforts for the program.
• Manage training needs for Peer Support Volunteers.
• Develop and revise directives, instructions, and procedures related to the program.
• Respond to congressional inquiries and author MOUs with other DHS components to expand peer support resources.

Requirements

• At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-13 level in federal service or equivalent public/private sector experience.
• Comprehensive knowledge of peer support program administration to provide authoritative advice and guidance.
• Advanced knowledge of peer support concepts for training volunteers in recognizing emotional distress.
• Expert knowledge of local, state, and national resources for coaching volunteers in crisis management.
• Skilled in planning, organizing, and implementing programs involving agency resources.

Nice-to-haves

• Certification in Critical Incident and Stress Management (CISM) is preferred but must be obtained within two years of employment.
