About the position

The Peer Support Specialist at Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center plays a crucial role in supporting clients through their recovery journey in the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program. This position is designed for individuals with lived experience in mental health and/or substance abuse who are successfully managing their recovery. The specialist serves as a role model, helping clients develop coping skills, regain independence, and connect with community resources, thereby improving their mental wellness.

Responsibilities

  • Provide peer assistance and support to clients in the ACT program.
  • Help consumers develop a network for information and support from others with similar experiences.
  • Work with individuals and groups to identify effective recovery strategies.
  • Model successful behaviors and share personal recovery experiences.
  • Assist consumers in accessing new resources and practicing new skills in the community.
  • Connect consumers with other consumers and community resources.
  • Provide information on educational and vocational opportunities.
  • Help consumers regain the ability to make independent choices in their treatment.
  • Assist consumers in discussing concerns about medications and treatment with clinicians.
  • Support consumers in articulating their goals in their individualized plans.
  • Help consumers identify and respond to triggers that impair their functioning.
  • Share recovery tools and strategies, including best practices and individually developed methods.

Requirements

  • A minimum of one year in the active stage of recovery from mental health and/or substance abuse services.
  • High school diploma or GED required; college education in social work or related field preferred but not mandatory.
  • Ability to pass required security background checks.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid, unrestricted driver's license.
  • Flexibility in assigned working hours.
  • Energetic and positive approach to workplace challenges.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in peer support or related roles.
  • Additional certifications in mental health or substance abuse counseling.
