About the position

The Peer Support Specialist will play a crucial role in providing community-based, on-scene social and emotional support to individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis. This position is designed to empower participants by offering advocacy and consumer information, ensuring that they have the necessary resources to navigate their recovery journey. The Peer Support Specialist will work closely with treatment team members to plan and implement activities that support individuals in living their own lives and directing their own recovery and wellness processes. This collaborative approach is essential in fostering a supportive environment where individuals can thrive and regain control over their mental health and well-being. In this role, the Peer Support Specialist will engage with individuals in various settings, providing immediate support during crises and helping them to access appropriate services. The specialist will utilize their lived experience as a self-identified consumer of mental health services to connect with participants on a personal level, offering empathy and understanding. This position requires a commitment to promoting recovery-oriented practices and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with mental health and substance use disorders. The Peer Support Specialist will also be responsible for maintaining accurate documentation of interactions and support provided, ensuring that all activities align with the goals of the treatment team. This role is vital in bridging the gap between individuals in crisis and the resources available to them, ultimately contributing to improved outcomes in mental health care.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Peer Support Specialist Certification.
  • Self-identified consumer of mental health services diagnosed with a mental illness or substance abuse disorder.
  • Attendance in Peer Support Training.
  • Understanding of the recovery process and how to use that process to help others.

Nice-to-haves

  • History of working in crisis or residential settings.
