About the position

The Peer Support Specialist I plays a crucial role in providing support and recovery training to individuals receiving mental health and substance use services. This position focuses on empowering individuals to achieve their recovery goals, fostering a supportive environment, and advocating for their needs and rights. The specialist engages with participants to help them identify their hopes and dreams, teaches recovery and life skills, and coordinates with clinical teams to arrange necessary services.

Responsibilities

• Provides peer support to engage individuals in a recovery partnership.
• Assists in identifying participant's hopes and dreams and the solutions they are seeking.
• Teaches recovery and life skills using recovery tools.
• Models hope, personal responsibility, and self-advocacy to demonstrate how recovery goals can be met.
• Assists in developing natural supports and community living.
• Cultivates connectedness in the person's life.
• Coordinates with the individual's clinical team to arrange services or resources.
• Completes clinical documentation as required.
• Understands and adheres to compliance standards as per the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Successful completion of Peer Employment Training and obtaining Certification as a Peer Support Specialist is required.
• Basic computer skills are necessary.
• Lived experience requiring mental health and/or substance use services is essential.
• Ability to teach/train recovery information and recovery tools is required.
• Effective communication skills are necessary.
• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Must be able to pass de-escalation training as defined by state requirements.
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality (HIPAA guidelines) and professionalism is required.
