About the position

The Peer Support Specialist III (Telephone Recovery Support - TRS) at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care is responsible for providing person-centered, culturally competent support to individuals seeking addiction treatment and recovery services. This role involves communicating with participants through various channels, assessing their service needs, and offering peer support and referrals to community resources. The specialist utilizes their own lived experiences to build rapport and assist consumers in identifying strengths and establishing recovery goals.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with TRS participants regarding addiction treatment and recovery support services via telephone, email, text, and regular mail.
  • Review the service needs of TRS participant callers and respond with peer support and appropriate referrals.
  • Assist consumers in identifying their strengths and wellness needs to establish recovery goals.
  • Collaborate with consumers to develop treatment/recovery and wellness plans.
  • Support consumers in engaging in their personal recovery and provide valuable peer support.
  • Maintain knowledge of available community resources and communicate them to the team and consumers.
  • Advocate for resources important to the consumer's expressed needs and preferences.
  • Act as a liaison to community resources and assist consumers in using these resources to enhance independent living skills and self-sufficiency.
  • Provide consumers with referrals to services and transportation to and from appointments.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • At least three (3) years of experience working in social or healthcare fields, preferably with substance abuse or mental health.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in the guiding principles of recovery and lived experience with the target population.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a computer for recording services and other basic office functions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's Degree.
  • Experience in supportive counseling and/or mental health information and referral services.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English).
