About the position

The Peer Support Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting individuals with mental health challenges, helping them to develop independent living goals and integrate into their communities. This position involves mentoring, providing supportive services, and utilizing personal experience to enhance the self-confidence and personal growth of peers. The specialist will work within various programs, including OMH Supportive Housing and Crisis Programs, to ensure individuals receive the necessary support and resources for housing stability and community involvement.

Responsibilities

• Support and mentor individuals in OMH Supportive Housing and Crisis Programs.
• Develop personal and meaningful independent living goals for individuals.
• Utilize experiential knowledge of mental health services to serve as a role model.
• Provide supportive services, including teaching independent living skills and accessing needed services.
• Visit individuals at least monthly or more frequently as needed.
• Assist individuals in developing culturally sensitive goals.
• Participate in screening and intake processes, facilitating assessments.
• Report possible violations of individual rights and maintain confidentiality.

Requirements

• NYS Peer Specialist Certification
• High School Diploma or GED
• Valid NYS Driver's License
• Organizational and communication skills for effective interaction
• Critical thinking and sound judgment skills
• Experience working with individuals diagnosed with behavioral health symptoms.

Nice-to-haves
