About the position

The Peer Support Specialist for the Young Adult Rental Assistance Program (YRAP) at Marion County Health & Human Services plays a crucial role in supporting young adults with serious mental health disorders to secure housing. Utilizing their lived experience, the specialist provides recovery-oriented support, helping individuals achieve their recovery goals, access housing, and develop independent living skills. This position emphasizes the importance of personal recovery journeys and community integration, fostering empowerment and self-efficacy among participants.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support, encouragement, and assistance regarding housing and mental health to young adults enrolled in YRAP.
  • Assist young adults with referrals to YRAP and access affordable housing resources.
  • Provide supportive navigation, advocacy, information, and coaching during application processes.
  • Share lived experience regarding housing insecurity and overcoming barriers when appropriate.
  • Conduct minimum monthly check-ins with program participants.
  • Provide education and training to assist young adults in acquiring skills for community stability and independence.
  • Support young adults in accessing long-term housing.
  • Provide information to community agencies about YRAP, including program philosophy and referral process.
  • Identify potential program participants who express a desire to increase wellness and independence.
  • Facilitate connections to services and activities that build self-efficacy.
  • Support young adults in developing a Person-Centered Housing Plan, including needs assessment and goal setting.
  • Promote activities that foster recovery, self-efficacy, and empowerment.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of clinical records in accordance with requirements.

Requirements

  • Mid-level supervising experience under 1 year.
  • Understanding of approaches to support others in recovery and resiliency.
  • Knowledge of community resources and how to connect individuals to those resources.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and provide documentation consistent with department standards.
  • Willingness to work hours conducive to reaching the identified population.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in mental health services or peer support roles.
  • Familiarity with SAMHSA's recovery model.
