About the position

The People Operations Director at Arts for Learning Maryland is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the human resources department, ensuring legal compliance, and implementing the organization's mission and talent strategy. This position plays a critical role in advancing equity and diversity within the organization while managing a team and collaborating with senior leadership to foster a healthy organizational culture.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the daily workflow of the People Operations department, including supervising a POPs Manager and POPs Data Coordinator.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and train new staff as needed within the department.
  • Encourage and provide professional development opportunities for the People Operations team.
  • Conduct constructive and timely performance feedback and evaluations for team members.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to understand organizational goals and implement staffing, recruiting, and retention strategies.
  • Serve on the operational leadership team to support and advance a healthy organizational culture focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Lead and administer human resource functions including compensation, benefits, leave, and performance management.
  • Work with department chiefs to anticipate and support annual hiring needs and implement timely hiring plans.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Department for accurate payroll documentation and benefits processing.
  • Develop and implement policies and training initiatives to support human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations, and maintain the employee handbook.
  • Develop and implement departmental budgets and maintain employee personnel files.

  • SHRM Certified preferred or Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field.
  • Nonprofit Management experience is desirable.
  • Experience working directly with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Excellent computer skills with demonstrated skills in database management and record-keeping.
  • Proficient with Google Workspace.
