About the position

Optum is seeking a Per Diem Hospitalist to join their team in Redlands, CA. This role is crucial in delivering high-quality healthcare services to inpatients under the care of Beaver Medical Group. The Hospitalist will be responsible for examining, assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients admitted to the hospital. This includes accepting admissions from the Emergency Room, Beaver Medical Group offices, and the Extended Care Center, as well as transfers from other facilities. The Hospitalist will prescribe medications and treatment regimens that are appropriate for the assessed medical conditions of the patients. In addition to direct patient care, the Hospitalist will consult with and refer patients to specialists as necessary. They will also direct and coordinate the patient care activities of nursing and support staff, ensuring that all care is delivered in accordance with established policies and procedures. The role requires effective communication with colleagues, primary care physicians, and transferring physicians to ensure a smooth transfer of care, particularly during weekends and holidays. The Hospitalist will also provide coverage for ER backup patients when they fall under the responsibility of Beaver Medical Group. The position involves providing direct supervision of physician extenders in the hospital setting, co-managing patients, and assessing the work of the extenders. The Hospitalist will follow standardized hospital order sets and/or a hospitalist manual to ensure compliance with care guidelines. Discharging patients when medically appropriate and utilizing hospital case management and ancillary personnel efficiently is also a key responsibility. The Hospitalist will report to the director of hospital care and the Medical Director of Beaver Medical Group, and will participate in committee activities relevant to hospitalist care. The shifts for this position are 12 hours long, and the role is part-time.

Responsibilities

  • Examine, assess, diagnose, and treat inpatients under the responsibility of Beaver Medical Group.
  • Accept admissions from the Emergency Room, BMG offices, and the Extended Care Center, and transfers from other facilities.
  • Prescribe medications and treatment regimens appropriate for assessed medical conditions.
  • Consult with and refer to specialists as appropriate.
  • Direct and coordinate patient care activities of nursing and support staff as required.
  • Respond to calls from medical and surgical floors, and the ICU for Beaver Medical Group patients.
  • Cover ER backup patients when they are a BMG responsibility.
  • Provide direct supervision of physician extenders in the hospital setting.
  • Follow care guidelines in the hospital in the form of standardized hospital order sets and/or hospitalist manual.
  • Discharge patients when medically appropriate and utilize hospital case management and ancillary personnel efficiently.
  • Communicate directly and effectively with colleagues, primary care physicians, and transferring physicians to ensure successful transfer of care.
  • Participate in committee activities relevant to hospitalist care.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years experience as a Hospitalist preferred.
  • BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Current CA and DEA license required.
  • Will accept Family Medicine (FM) and Internal Medicine (IM) candidates.
