About the position

The Performance Test Engineer - Manufacturing role at Johnson Controls involves providing hands-on testing support for large tonnage water-cooled centrifugal chillers. This position requires managing the entire testing process from design and planning through execution and data analysis, ensuring that performance requirements are met and communicated effectively to customers. The role emphasizes collaboration with sales engineers and customers, adherence to safety standards, and continuous improvement of testing procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide active, ongoing day-to-day testing support for large tonnage centrifugal chillers.
  • Manage the testing process from design and planning through execution and data analysis.
  • Interface with customers for factory witness tests.
  • Plan and execute tests of water-cooled centrifugal chillers.
  • Communicate with sales engineers to disseminate and agree upon test plans.
  • Create detailed test requests to meet customer needs.
  • Use in-house rating programs to determine chiller rated performance.
  • Perform calculations to simulate the effects of fouling.
  • Acquire and provide input for data acquisition software setup.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues with chillers that do not operate or meet performance requirements.
  • Communicate results and resolutions with sales engineers and external customers.
  • Provide summaries of testing results to product engineering for further analysis.
  • Present testing design and setup to customers, including calibration methods and testing procedures.
  • Work with sales engineers and customers to resolve testing concerns or misunderstandings.
  • Participate in the revision of standard procedures and testing standards.
  • Develop or recommend new procedures and processes for efficient testing services.
  • Adhere to the Company's Code of Conduct and Business Ethics standards.

Requirements

  • An Engineering degree or related field.
  • 3 years direct work experience in large tonnage water-cooled chiller equipment development testing.
  • Good understanding of HVAC/R systems, concepts, and diagnostics as applied to test subjects and facilities.
  • Experience in engineering and testing with various test instrumentation for data acquisition and analysis.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electronics/software, especially starters, variable frequency drives, and control systems.
  • Experience in sound and/or vibration testing instrumentation and analysis software.
  • Familiarity with general test data acquisition and sensors hardware and software, especially LabVIEW and National Instruments.
