About the position

The position involves managing cardiopulmonary bypass and ancillary perfusion procedures for patients requiring advanced cardiac support. The role is critical in ensuring patient safety and effective treatment during surgical procedures, requiring a high level of clinical vigilance and communication with the healthcare team.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and manage patient profiles for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
  • Utilize appropriate equipment and monitor data based on patient profiles.
  • Communicate effectively with open-heart team personnel during procedures.
  • Recognize and resolve variances and abnormal situations during CPB.
  • Utilize safety devices during cardiopulmonary bypass as per departmental policy.
  • Demonstrate clinical vigilance before, during, and after CPB procedures.
  • Facilitate discussions with the healthcare team regarding patient care and treatment decisions.
  • Demonstrate competence in ancillary perfusion procedures as per departmental policy.
  • Manage ancillary procedures using appropriate equipment and monitoring data.
  • Troubleshoot technical devices as needed.
  • Create and maintain accurate electronic records and documentation according to departmental standards.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited cardiovascular perfusion training program.
  • Master of Science degree in perfusion or related scientific field or allied health specialty, or a bachelor's degree with three years of certified perfusionist experience.
  • Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and licensure by the North Carolina Medical Board.
  • New graduates must attain NC provisional perfusion license prior to employment and achieve ABCP certification and full NC LP licensure within one year of hire.
  • Validated for Basic Life Support and completion of all regulatory requirements within the probationary period.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with hazardous waste and infectious materials exposure.
  • Physical abilities to complete job duties under prescribed environmental and working conditions.
