About the position

The Permit/PIO Technician (Regulation Support Technician II) plays a crucial role in the licenses and permits division of Howard County Government. This position involves performing technical office work related to the processing and review of various permit applications, ensuring compliance with established guidelines, and providing assistance to the public regarding licensing and permit requirements. The technician will handle complex inquiries, review technical documents, and maintain accurate records to support the efficient operation of the division.

Responsibilities

  • Receives permit or license applications over the counter, in the mail, or online for various types of permits.
  • Reviews applications for technical accuracy and processes them according to established guidelines.
  • Interprets complex requirements and explains them to the public.
  • Answers inquiries and assists customers in completing applications at the Licenses and Permits Front Counter.
  • Reviews site plans, construction drawings, and specifications.
  • Maintains files and recording procedures for applications and documentation.
  • Processes grading surety bonds and prepares refund payment claims.
  • Evaluates information to determine applicant qualifications for licensure.
  • Collects fees and prepares invoices for payment of permits.
  • Tracks applications in the review process and advises customers on their status.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply word processing software and personal computer operation skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Considerable experience in a customer service environment.
  • Knowledge of construction terminology.
  • Valid Class C Maryland Driver's license or equivalent.
