About the position

The Permit Technician position provides technical and administrative support to the Planning and Building Code Department of Butte-Silver Bow. This role involves significant public interaction, assisting applicants with their applications and inquiries, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal building codes. The technician is responsible for managing documentation, facilitating communication between applicants and municipal departments, and maintaining a high-quality customer experience throughout the permitting process.

Responsibilities

  • Performs public counter work.
  • Provides information and direction to the public on building issues and applicable codes.
  • Reviews, routes, processes, and checks applications and permits.
  • Issues building and engineering permits after verifying compliance with laws.
  • Calculates processing fees and provides fee estimates.
  • Coordinates with the Planning Department to track cash and performance bonds.
  • Performs research and outreach to develop standard operating procedures.
  • Prepares reports, memoranda, and letters related to permitting.
  • Collects, records, and balances permit-related monetary transactions.
  • Schedules and coordinates building inspections as required.
  • Establishes and maintains filing systems for the Planning and Building Code Department.
  • Complies with health and safety programs and maintains a safe work area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of technical or administrative experience involving public contact, preferably in a building or engineering division.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain an ICC Permit Technician Certificate within one year of hire.
  • Current Montana Driver's license or ability to obtain one.

Nice-to-haves

  • Specialized coursework in building, architecture, or engineering related courses.
