About the position

The Personal Care Assistant (PCA) at Fred A. Anderson Elementary School is a vital role designed to support individual students with special needs. This position focuses on providing both physical assistance and emotional support to ensure that students can fully engage in their educational experiences. The PCA will work closely with assigned students, helping them navigate their daily activities and fostering an environment conducive to learning. The role requires a compassionate individual who can adapt to the unique needs of each student, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the school day. In this part-time position, the PCA will assist students with personal hygiene and grooming, which includes tasks such as toileting and other self-help skills. The PCA will also provide physical care, which may involve changing diapers, assisting with clothing changes, and positioning students on orthopedic equipment. A significant aspect of the role involves lifting students in and out of wheelchairs, as well as assisting them off the floor and onto changing tables. The PCA will supervise students in various situations, carefully observing their behavior to prevent any potential injuries to themselves or others. Additionally, the PCA will assist students during transportation, helping them on and off buses, securing and releasing seatbelts, and managing wheelchairs. This includes lifting students, pushing wheelchairs, and ensuring that personal belongings are gathered and messages from home are communicated effectively. The PCA will also perform other duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor, contributing to a supportive and safe educational environment for all students.

Responsibilities

  • Assists student(s) with personal hygiene, grooming functions, toileting, and other self-help skills.
  • Provides physical care for assigned student(s) such as changing diapers and clothes and positioning students on orthopedic equipment.
  • Lifts student in/out of wheelchairs, assisting students off of floor, toilet/changing table.
  • Supervises student(s) in a variety of situations - observing behavior of students carefully to ensure that they do nothing to injure themselves or others.
  • Assists student to/from and on/off buses, securing and releasing seatbelts, vest, and wheelchairs, lifting student, pushing wheelchairs, lifting unoccupied wheelchairs, gathering personal possessions, and receiving messages or special instructions from home.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Requirements

  • Associates' Degree or have 48 semester hours of college coursework preferred.
  • Experience in knowledge of students' needs at different ages, educational and developmental levels.
  • Ability to maintain confidential student information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing, and the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
