About the position

The Personal Care Assistant (PCA) role is focused on providing essential personal care and support to residents in a healthcare setting. This position involves assisting with daily living activities, ensuring the safety and comfort of residents, and promoting their overall well-being. The PCA will work primarily during evening and night shifts, contributing to a team-oriented environment dedicated to high-quality care.

Responsibilities

  • Treats residents with respect at all times.
  • Provides personal care such as baths, showers, oral hygiene, and finger/toenail care.
  • Assists/shaves male residents as needed.
  • Uses safety measures for residents and self, employing good body mechanics at all times.
  • Utilizes safety devices, such as side rails, as necessary.
  • Assists residents to the bathroom as required.
  • Encourages and assists residents to attend all therapies and programs ordered by the physician.
  • Assists residents in practicing activities or exercises learned in therapy programs.
  • Supports mental rehabilitation programs, including reality orientation and validation therapy.
  • Organizes care to enable residents to attend scheduled activities or therapies.
  • Assists in transporting residents to activity programs.
  • Responds promptly to call lights and provides or obtains necessary care.
  • Observes and reports unusual symptoms, changes, accidents, and injuries to the charge nurse or charge C.N.A.
  • Reports to the charge nurse or charge C.N.A. before going off duty.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the charge nurse or supervisor.
  • Makes beds and tidies the unit daily.
  • Cares for soiled and clean linen and personal resident laundry according to facility procedures.
  • Follows established infection control guidelines for maintaining cleanliness in various areas of the facility.
  • Cleans and cares for equipment and utensils as assigned by the charge nurse or charge C.N.A.
  • Attends staff meetings and development programs as required.
  • Wears a uniform as designated by the facility.
  • Interprets the 'Resident Rights' to residents, families, or other individuals as necessary.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalency certificate (GED) is required.
  • No prior experience is necessary.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant (not required but preferred).
