About the position

The Personal Support Specialist (PSS) at Rumford Community Home plays a vital role in providing personal care and support to residents in a long-term care facility. This full-time position involves working closely with nursing staff to ensure the comfort and safety of residents, assisting with daily living activities, and maintaining a homelike environment. The PSS is expected to demonstrate compassion, patience, and respect while delivering care and support to residents.

Responsibilities

  • Assist nurses in administering personal care to residents, including bathing, hygiene, and toileting.
  • Set up and monitor residents' prescribed diets during meal times.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Charge Nurse.
  • Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), providing varying levels of assistance as needed.
  • Encourage residents to achieve maximum ambulation, following physical therapy instructions.
  • Apply anti-embolic stockings and assist with bowel/bladder retraining and toileting.
  • Care for prosthetic devices and assist residents with their application and cleaning.
  • Complete daily charting of care provided using CNA documentation sheets.
  • Collect urine and stool specimens for lab testing.
  • Provide colostomy care and report any skin breakdown to the Charge Nurse.
  • Maintain standard precautions and care of contaminated equipment.
  • Assist with personal care, including baths and oral hygiene.
  • Assist with the emptying of bedpans and urinals, checking them regularly.
  • Provide comfort measures and assist with positioning of residents.
  • Assist with postmortem care as designated by the Charge Nurse.
  • Assist with range of motion exercises and transfers using various aids.
  • Apply treatments as directed by the Charge Nurse.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED preferred but not required.
  • Must be eligible to obtain PSS certification within the first 120 days unless already certified.
  • Completion of certification program and placement on the State Registry within four months is required.
  • Residential Aide must have Residential Care Specialist 1 (RCS-I) or Personal Support Specialist (PSS) Certification.
  • Six months to one year of experience preferred.
  • Must demonstrate tolerance, patience, and respect for residents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a long-term care setting.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.
