About the position

The Personal Support Specialist (PSS) at Rumford Community Home is responsible for assisting with the overall care of residents in a long-term care facility. This full-time position involves working closely with nurses and other team members to provide personal care, ensure a safe and comfortable environment, and support residents in their daily activities. The role requires compassion, patience, and a commitment to treating residents with dignity and respect.

Responsibilities

  • Assists nurses in administering personal care needs to residents, including bathing, hygiene, and toileting.
  • Sets up and monitors residents' prescribed diets during meal times.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Charge Nurse.
  • Assists residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) from setup to total assistance.
  • Encourages residents to achieve maximum ambulation following physical therapy instructions.
  • Applies anti-embolic stockings as needed.
  • Assists with bowel/bladder retraining and incontinent care.
  • Cares for prosthetic devices and assists residents with their application and cleaning.
  • Completes daily charting of care provided using CNA documentation sheets.
  • Collects urine and stool specimens for lab testing.
  • Provides colostomy care and reports any skin breakdown to the Charge Nurse.
  • Maintains standard precautions and proper care of linens and contaminated equipment.
  • Assists with personal care, including baths and oral hygiene.
  • Checks and empties bedpans and urinals regularly.
  • Provides comfort measures and assists with positioning of residents.
  • Assists with postmortem care as designated by the Charge Nurse.
  • Assists with range of motion exercises and transfers using various aids.
  • Applies treatments as directed by the Charge Nurse.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED preferred but not required.
  • Must be eligible to obtain PSS certification within the first 120 days unless already certified.
  • Completion of certification program and placement on the State Registry within four months is required.
  • Residential Aide must have Residential Care Specialist 1 (RCS-I) or Personal Support Specialist (PSS) Certification.
  • Six months to one year of experience preferred.
  • Must demonstrate tolerance, patience, and respect for residents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a long-term care facility.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.
