About the position

The Machine Learning Engineer Intern at PNNL's Environmental and Molecular Sciences Lab (EMSL) will focus on creating data products that enhance scientific data accessibility. This role involves leveraging advanced software and machine learning technologies to adhere to FAIR data principles, enabling search and discovery through large language models (LLMs). The position is fully remote and aims to empower scientists by unlocking the potential of scientific data.

Responsibilities

  • Leverage state-of-the-art LLMs to build interactive AI applications.
  • Use LLMs and REST APIs to build RAG pipelines.
  • Utilize cutting-edge techniques to build agentic systems.
  • Leverage a wide range of technical skills to solve complex, multi-domain challenges.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to understand scope and requirements for data products.
  • Interface with many teams within EMSL to provide software solutions that work across the entire organization.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
  • 3 years of experience with Python.
  • 3 years of experience with SQL.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience building agentic LLM systems.
  • Familiar with machine learning frameworks and NLP.
  • Experience with scientific data.
  • Experience creating data pipelines.
  • Experience with bash scripting.
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Experience building context-aware LLM-based applications.
  • Experience with Linux.
  • Experience with git.
