About the position

The Medication Safety Coordinator (MSC) plays a crucial role in leading and directing medication safety initiatives within the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health (UM UCH) system. This position is responsible for coordinating activities related to medication safety, including reporting, system evaluation, and education, while fostering a culture of zero harm related to medication errors. The MSC collaborates with healthcare team members to enhance patient safety and improve medication practices.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate activities related to medication safety as outlined in the UM UCH Patient Safety Program.
• Report and evaluate systems and processes related to medication safety.
• Formulate recommendations and initiatives to improve medication safety.
• Assist with the management of the UM UCH Event Reporting System.
• Educate healthcare team members on medication safety practices.
• Lead the culture of zero harm related to medication errors.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy is required; Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) preferred.
• Licensed to practice pharmacy in the State of Maryland or eligible for licensure.
• Minimum of three (3) years of hospital pharmacy experience is required.
• Three (3) years of experience in medication or patient safety in a hospital setting is preferred.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements of regulatory and accreditation agencies.
• Ability to use computer systems to manage patient information.
• Proficiency in problem-solving and analytical skills related to medication safety.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with safety database management and reviewing safety events.
• Knowledge of data measurement and basic statistical analysis.
• Familiarity with quality improvement strategies such as root cause analysis and LEAN concepts.
