About the position

The Pharmacy Administrative Specialist at Houston Methodist is an advanced pharmacist practitioner responsible for coordinating pharmaceutical care, conducting medication evaluations, and developing drug policies to enhance operational efficiency and patient safety. This role involves serving on various committees, mentoring pharmacy staff, and leading quality management initiatives to ensure high standards of pharmaceutical care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide and coordinate pharmaceutical care to patients through medication use evaluations and drug policy development.
  • Serve on Medical Staff, Hospital, and/or Departmental Committees or Subcommittees.
  • Act as a role model for pharmacists, technicians, pharmacy students, and residents in integrating clinical and dispensing services.
  • Plan and participate in staff development and quality management initiatives.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals for problem resolution and achievement of patient-specific goals.
  • Develop educational materials and programs for pharmacy staff and hospital personnel.
  • Communicate with pharmacy management regarding personnel issues and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Manage daily workload fluctuations and recommend staffing changes for optimal patient care.
  • Oversee staff activities to ensure accurate and timely medication delivery.
  • Perform functions of a unit-based pharmacist, including order verification and patient counseling.
  • Coordinate department reporting related to specialty focus area and monitor quality management data.
  • Participate in developing the department's annual budget and identify cost-saving opportunities.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for required credentials.
  • An advanced degree (master's or Pharm.D) preferred.
  • Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 and PGY2 residency training or equivalent experience.
  • Six years of pharmacist experience in a relevant setting, or five years with demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Completion of a PGY2 Pharmacy Administrative residency is highly preferred.
  • Required certifications: Pharmacist State Licensure, BLS, PPC, NRP (if applicable), IV Certification (if applicable).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a hospital or specialty pharmacy setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Research competence in pharmacy practice.
