About the position

The Pharmacy Automation Technician at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for supporting the automation systems within the pharmacy department. This role involves managing inventory, evaluating system stock levels, coordinating training, and ensuring the proper functioning of automated pharmacy equipment. The technician will work closely with various stakeholders to enhance pharmacy operations and improve medication delivery systems, ultimately contributing to the care of Veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to the Inpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy and other VHA pharmacies using knowledge of automated equipment.
  • Evaluate system stock levels and generate reports based on activity and formulary.
  • Manage new medications and adjust inventory levels based on usage and formulary changes.
  • Review activity reports for discrepancies and resolve technical and workflow issues.
  • Coordinate the evaluation process of new technology with necessary stakeholders.
  • Manage training and education for pharmacy staff related to automation and medication delivery systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot pharmacy automated equipment.
  • Gather, evaluate, and analyze data to maximize production and efficiency.
  • Coach, mentor, and assist other pharmacy technicians in their duties.
  • Cover outpatient/inpatient areas as needed to meet pharmacy department needs.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the centralized pharmacy in accordance with established policies.
  • Assist pharmacy supervisors with equipment requests and contract needs.
  • Maintain knowledge of pharmacy dispensing equipment and ensure preventive maintenance is performed as required.
  • Serve as a liaison between professional and non-professional staff to improve communication and resolve work-related problems.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) in a pharmacy technician role.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy concepts, principles, and policies, particularly in automation and medication delivery systems.
  • Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy employees.
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze, and coordinate workflow within the pharmacy.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with automated pharmacy systems and equipment.
  • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT or ExCPT).
