About the position

The Pharmacy IV Technician II plays a crucial role in the preparation and delivery of IV admixture solutions at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. This position is responsible for ensuring that 80-85% of all IV admixtures are prepared accurately and delivered to the appropriate clinical units under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The technician will engage in various tasks including ordering, receiving, invoicing, and maintaining inventory of both controlled and non-controlled pharmaceuticals. Additionally, the Pharmacy IV Technician II will coordinate the distribution of controlled drugs in collaboration with Pharmacy Technician I and other pharmacy staff members. In this role, the technician will be expected to maintain the IV admixture room, ensuring that it is clean and organized according to hospital policies. This includes the proper use of Laminar Flow Hoods and adherence to safety protocols. The technician will also be responsible for generating accurate records for billing purposes, assisting in the training of new staff, and maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations regarding controlled substances. Monthly audits and inspections will be part of the routine responsibilities, ensuring that all medications are accounted for and that expired medications are properly managed. The Pharmacy IV Technician II will also be involved in statistical reporting related to discarded IVs and will be required to attend hospital-wide orientations and meetings. Flexibility in scheduling is essential to meet the demands of patient care, and the technician must demonstrate a commitment to providing high-quality service in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare IV admixtures under the supervision of a pharmacist and deliver them to the correct clinical unit.
  • Maintain inventory in the IV admixture room, including ordering supplies from the storeroom.
  • Notify the pharmacy buyer of special drugs and supplies needed for the area.
  • Clean and organize the IV admixture room and Laminar Flow Hoods according to hospital policies.
  • Provide accurate records for charging/crediting purposes to the charge technician.
  • Assist the Pharmacy Director with monthly statistics on discarded IVs.
  • Generate computer records to fill IV medication charts for nursing units.
  • Process drug returns from clinical units and return unused medications to stock.
  • Assist in training new staff on IV admixture preparation and inventory control techniques.
  • Maintain computerized controlled drug inventory per state, federal, and hospital regulations.
  • Order controlled drug inventory from wholesalers as per regulations.
  • Inventory the narcotic vault once a month and perform random audits on selected narcotics as requested.
  • Conduct monthly pharmacy inspections for expired medications.
  • Prepare interdepartmental charge reports monthly and annual inventory reports.
  • Maintain up-to-date labeling for all medications within the central pharmacy.
  • Complete invoices as required by state and federal law.
  • Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling to ensure patient care.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Pharmacy Technician program.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.
