The Operations Pharmacy Technician I plays a crucial role in the pharmacy by assisting in various aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. This position is designed for individuals who are beginning their careers in pharmacy and are looking to gain valuable experience in a supportive environment. Technicians in this role will work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and will be responsible for following standard, written procedures and guidelines to ensure the safe and effective distribution of medications. In this position, the technician will be involved in preparing unit-dose medications, delivering medications, and managing the ordering and delivery of drug supplies. They will read physician orders and prescriptions to prepare medications for dispensing, which may include unique dosage forms tailored for pediatric and geriatric patients. A solid understanding of pharmaceutical and medical terminology, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with patients and caregivers, is essential for success in this role. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records of controlled substances, taking inventory of medication supplies, and ensuring that outdated or deteriorated medications are replaced promptly. Additionally, they will prepare non-parenteral medications, label prescription products appropriately, and perform necessary arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations. Adherence to departmental standards for speed and accuracy is critical, as is the ability to prepare and label prepackaged medications based on usage data.
