About the position

The Pharmacy Specialized Tech in the Outpatient Pharmacy (Transplant) at the University of Rochester plays a crucial role in providing specialized support, oversight, and leadership within the pharmacy department. This full-time position requires the technician to possess advanced knowledge of specific tasks and operations, enabling them to assist in training, troubleshooting, and process improvement. The technician will primarily focus on their specialized area but will also be expected to perform other pharmacy technician duties as needed to support the department's overall operations. The role is designed to ensure compliance with state, federal, and local regulations while maintaining the highest standards of pharmacy practice. In this position, the technician will be responsible for developing and maintaining training materials specific to their specialty area, coordinating the training of new technicians, and ensuring that competency is maintained through appropriate programs. They will document completed training and provide constructive feedback to staff to enhance performance. Additionally, the technician will develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for their specialty area, actively seek process improvement strategies, and implement new procedures in collaboration with pharmacy management. The technician will also be tasked with troubleshooting common software and hardware issues, handling complex problems, and coordinating with vendor support when necessary. They will provide coverage for their specialized area, act as a role model for team members, and maintain skills in other areas to ensure staffing flexibility. The technician will serve as a resource for other technicians, guiding decision-making based on their expertise and experience. Overall, this position is integral to the efficient operation of the pharmacy department, ensuring that all processes are followed and that staff are well-trained and competent in their roles.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain training materials specific to their assigned specialty area.
  • Coordinate and actively participate in training of new technicians.
  • Ensure competency is maintained and develop competency programs where appropriate.
  • Maintain documentation of completed training and competency.
  • Provide feedback to staff when issues are identified or additional training/information is required to improve performance with tasks/processes.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for their specialty area.
  • Maintain workflow and identify opportunities to reduce waste of resources and maximize efficiency.
  • Actively seek process improvement strategies and bring forward creative solutions.
  • Implement new procedures in conjunction with supervisor and/or pharmacy management.
  • Ensure all technicians are following proper process and procedure; provide feedback and remediation if necessary.
  • Provide data and metrics as available to management to monitor efficiency and efficacy of processes.
  • Create and maintain downtime procedures published online for all appropriate staff to access.
  • Able to troubleshoot all common issues with any software or hardware utilized.
  • Handle most complex issues and triage as necessary.
  • Contact and coordinate with vendor field technicians or support as appropriate.
  • Notify appropriate staff, supervisors, and management if the issue will impact operational workflow or if there are changes to the work process.
  • Provide support to the department when able by troubleshooting issues with commonly used pharmacy technology including eRecord, Pyxis, and CII Safe.
  • Assist with handling of workflow issues in all areas of the department as an experienced technician.
  • Provide coverage to their specialized area on a routine basis, assisting in daily workflow and during downtime.
  • Act as a role model for team members, following all standard operating procedures, policies, and regulations.
  • Maintain skills in other areas outside their specialty area to allow for staffing flexibility and assigned duties as needed.
  • Serve as a resource for other technicians, using their expertise and experience to guide decision making.
  • Complete other assigned tasks appropriate for certified pharmacy technicians.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least three years of experience as a pharmacy technician in a related practice area preferred.
  • PTCB Certification required.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in pharmacy applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the University.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage many details with accuracy under pressure.
  • Good moral character and application of the ICARE values.
  • Completion of ASHP accredited training program or equivalent experience as a pharmacy technician required.
