The Pharmacy Technician 1 at RUSH University Medical Center plays a crucial role in supporting licensed pharmacists in the practice of pharmacy. The technician will also be responsible for the accurate and timely filling and delivery of patient-specific medications, as well as maintaining inventory and supply management in assigned areas. The position may require troubleshooting of Pyxis equipment and utilizing various technologies in the pharmacy. The role demands strong communication skills, particularly in customer service, and the ability to follow directions, analyze problems, and interpret analytical data. The technician is accountable for their actions and development, and must be able to work extended hours as needed. The position operates in a professional office setting, utilizing standard office equipment and requiring some physical activity such as filing and lifting files. Overall, the Pharmacy Technician 1 is integral to the pharmacy team, contributing to the safe and effective delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients.

Responsibilities

  • Assist licensed pharmacists in preparing, filling, and labeling medications for patients.
  • Respond to the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Participate in the Pharmacy Department Technician Career Ladder.
  • Recognize and identify various classifications of medications, medication names, dosage forms, and routes of administration.
  • Understand pharmacy workflows for first doses, Pyxis refills, cart fill, and batches.
  • Interpret EPIC pharmacy labels accurately.
  • Identify and differentiate different types of medication orders (Scheduled, PRN, Once, STAT, NOW).
  • Label all medication dosage forms appropriately, including auxiliary labels for expiration and storage.
  • Fill and deliver patient-specific medications and restock Pyxis accurately and timely.
  • Troubleshoot Pyxis equipment issues as needed.
  • Utilize technology in the pharmacy, including Carousels, DoseEdge, Pharmacy Ideas, WASP, MILT, and RxVerify.
  • Prepare non-sterile compounding and packaging of medications.
  • Draw up oral syringes and compound oral suspensions accurately.
  • Comply with regulations for repackaging medications and required labeling and documentation procedures.
  • Answer phones and assist callers with missing medication requests and other technical duties.
  • Utilize Epic for technical requests related to medications and inventory.
  • Maintain inventory, storage, and supply of assigned areas.
  • Exchange emergency carts and complete required documentation.
  • Know laws and regulations related to controlled substances.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all equipment and work areas.
  • Participate in departmental committees and educational activities as assigned.
  • Coach and train other technicians and pharmacy students.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Currently possess State of Illinois Pharmacy Technician licensure.
  • Eligible for Pharmacy Technician Licensure in Illinois.
  • Completion of an ACPE/ASHP accredited pharmacy technician training program if licensed on or after January 1, 2024.
  • PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) certification or ability to achieve by second license renewal.
  • Ability to effectively follow directions, analyze problems, and interpret analytical data.
  • Strong communication skills with an emphasis on customer service.
