About the position

As a Pharmacy Technician at Baystate Health, you will play a crucial role in supporting the pharmacy department under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Your responsibilities will encompass a variety of essential functions that are vital to the effective operation of the pharmacy. You will be expected to maintain a comprehensive understanding of Baystate Medical Center and Baystate Health Pharmacy Services, including their values, policies, and procedures. This knowledge is fundamental to ensuring that you can perform your duties effectively and contribute to the overall mission of the organization. Your role will involve drug distribution, quality improvement initiatives, customer service, and teamwork. You will be responsible for accurately compounding, pre-packaging, and re-packaging medications, as well as preparing and distributing controlled substances in accordance with departmental policies. A strong understanding of the chemical and physical properties of drugs is essential, as you will need to identify medications that require special handling, such as those that are light-sensitive or caustic. In addition to your technical skills, you will be expected to operate automated technology and participate in drug purchasing and inventory control. Your commitment to quality improvement will be demonstrated through your participation in training new pharmacy employees and maintaining a working knowledge of medication error prevention methods. You will also be responsible for effective communication with other healthcare team members and ensuring the confidentiality of patient information. Attendance and adherence to Baystate Health's policies are also critical components of your role.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge and understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Accurately compounds, pre-packages, and re-packages medications, including labeling for bulk solid/liquid dosage forms.
  • Performs calculations required for dosage determinations and solutions preparation using weight and volume equivalents.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled in the pharmacy department.
  • Operates automated technology (Parata/ScriptPro Robotics, computers, etc.) in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Performs essential functions relating to drug purchasing and inventory control as needed.
  • Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees.
  • Interacts effectively with other members of the department and health care team on a regular basis.
  • Follows BH attendance policy.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (Required)
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician - Other, Pharmacy Technician - Other certifications required.
  • Possesses good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) preferred.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated math skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous Retail Pharmacy Technician experience preferred.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish.
