About the position

The Certified Pharmacy Technician I at Carilion Clinic plays a crucial role in transforming healthcare by working under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist to provide essential services to Pharmacy customers. This position supports the Pharmacist in delivering Pharmaceutical Care, which encompasses a variety of responsibilities that are vital to the efficient operation of the pharmacy. The technician may be involved in one or more specialized areas such as Basic Zone Tech, CRCH Tech, Non-Sterile Compounding, or Billing, depending on the needs of the pharmacy and the technician's training and competencies. In addition to these specialized roles, the Pharmacy Technician I is responsible for managing inventory, stocking, and maintaining the carousel and Pyxis units, including handling downtimes. The technician will also deliver medications to various units and departments throughout the hospital, ensuring that all medications are accurately charged, credited, and returned in the Epic system. Managing the Epic message and call center is another critical responsibility, along with overseeing the management of expiring drugs throughout the hospital. The technician will conduct monthly unit inspections, check in, reconcile, and refill EMS boxes, code trays, and other necessary supplies. They will prepare non-sterile kits for the IV Admixture and dispensing areas, as well as prepare medications for patient-specific needs, floor stock, cart fill, and departmental dispensing. This includes the cleaning and dispensing of leeches and managing the dispensing and returns of controlled substances through the C-II Safe. Additionally, the technician will research and resolve any discrepancies related to the Pyxis system as appropriate. Overall, the Certified Pharmacy Technician I is an integral part of the pharmacy team, contributing to the safe and effective delivery of medications and pharmaceutical care to patients.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Successful completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician training course is preferred.
  • Successful completion of Pharmacy Service Line competencies within 6 months of hire is required.
  • Previous pharmacy work experience is preferred.
  • Registration with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals is required.
  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician is required within 9 months of hire.
  • Ability to maintain familiarity with a large number (1000-2000) of medications and focus on attention to detail/accuracy.
  • Customer service orientation is essential.
  • Knowledge and use of general office equipment and procedures, including computer/keyboard skills, are required.
  • Ability to solve simple mathematical and logistical problems in the work environment is necessary.
  • Ability to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision is required.
