The technician operates under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and is responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall operation of the pharmacy. Key responsibilities include procuring and distributing medication orders based on requests from physicians or pharmacists, as well as filling physician orders, care packages, and medication carts accurately. The technician is also tasked with restocking automated dispensing devices, crash carts, and fire medic kits, ensuring that all areas are adequately supplied. Maintaining the drug inventory is another critical aspect of the role, which involves monitoring stock levels, rotating medications to prevent expiration, and identifying outdated or unusable drugs for replacement. In addition to these responsibilities, the Pharmacy Technician I is expected to enter patient charges and credits accurately, generate necessary reports, and maintain logs and records as required. The role also includes customer service elements, such as answering phone calls, directing inquiries to the appropriate personnel, and making stat deliveries when requested. Participation in staff meetings, orientation, and training programs is essential for maintaining competence in the position, and the technician is expected to complete all required assessments and evaluations. Responsibilities

  • Assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications (non-sterile).
  • Restock automated dispensing devices, crash carts, and fire medic kits.
  • Process patient charges and credits accurately.
  • Maintain the drug inventory according to established policies and procedures.
  • Procure and distribute medication orders per physician or pharmacist request.
  • Fill physician orders, care packages, medication carts, or stock requisitions accurately.
  • Replenish medications in crash carts, fire medic boxes, and automated dispensing equipment.
  • Deliver/tube medications and supplies to patient care areas according to schedule.
  • Assist in orders, receiving, unpacking, and storing drugs and supplies.
  • Rotate stock to ensure use before expiration date.
  • Identify and replace outdated and unusable drugs.
  • Restock medication dispensing areas.
  • Prepackage bulk medications in unit dose packages.
  • Contribute to the effective operation of the department.
  • Pick up items and medications for return from patient care areas during delivery rounds.
  • Enter charges and credits for patient medications accurately.
  • Generate reports, pick lists, and labels as required.
  • Answer the telephone and direct calls appropriately.
  • Answer requests at the window and make stat deliveries as needed.
  • Maintain logs, records, and other required documentation accurately.
  • File documentation in appropriate locations.
  • Participate in the peer review process and complete self-evaluations.
  • Maintain competence required for current job title/position.
  • Attend pharmacy staff meetings.
  • Participate in orientation, education, and training programs.
  • Review literature and other materials as assigned.
  • Complete all competence/skills assessment requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Pharmacy Technician Registration through the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy.
  • 2-3 years of pharmacy technician experience preferred, but not required.
  • Technician Certification preferred, but not required.
