About the position

The Pharmacy Technician I position at Northeastern Health System is a PRN role that operates under the supervision and direction of the pharmacy supervisor and/or clinical-staff pharmacist. The primary responsibility of the pharmacy technician is to assist pharmacists with both non-technical and some technical functions that are essential for the smooth operation of the pharmacy. This includes maintaining established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs, as well as adhering to safety, environmental, and infection control standards. In this role, the pharmacy technician will be involved in various tasks such as filling individual patient orders, maintaining patient files, and packaging and labeling unit doses from bulk containers. The technician will also assist in the preparation and restocking of automated dispensing machines (ADMs) under the supervision of a pharmacist, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently, accurately, and in a timely manner. Additionally, the technician will be responsible for receiving, verifying, and documenting all drugs and supplies received from suppliers, as well as preparing and ensuring deliveries to patient units and ancillary departments, including controlled substances when applicable. The position requires the technician to replenish medicine and supply carts for nursing units, maintain accurate records, and check stock daily to reorder as needed. The technician will also assist with IV preparation and delivery, deliver interoffice mail and documents, and follow policies regarding attendance and work hours. Continuous professional growth is encouraged through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-service meetings, and workshops. The technician will also be expected to attend meetings as required and perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environment and infection control standards.
  • Assists pharmacists with filling individual patient orders and maintaining patients' files.
  • Packages and labels unit doses from bulk containers.
  • Prepares and performs restocks of automated dispensing machines (ADMs) efficiently, accurately and timely, including completing appropriate paperwork.
  • Receives, verifies, and documents all drugs and supplies received from suppliers.
  • Prepares and makes or ensures deliveries to patient units, ancillary departments, and TMG offices, including controlled substances, where applicable.
  • Replenishes medicine and supply carts for nursing units and keeps accurate records.
  • Maintains pharmacy records, reports, and files as required.
  • Checks stock on a daily basis to reorder stock as needed and to identify and reorder outdated stock.
  • Ensures that stock is maintained in accordance with the manufacturers' requirements.
  • Assists with I.V. preparation and delivery.
  • Delivers interoffice mail and other documents to appropriate offices or mailboxes.
  • Follows policies and procedures regarding attendance and work hours.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature reading, inservice meetings, and workshops.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education - High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Preferred Certification / Registration - Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)
  • Minimum Experience - No experience required
  • Preferred Experience - 1 year recent experience as permitted Pharmacy Technician
  • Preferred Course(s)/Training - Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician Course
